Travel and transport
Getting to Melbourne is easy with flights arriving direct to two airports.
- Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine (MEL) is 22km (14miles) from the city and services international and domestic arrivals
- Avalon Airport (AVV) is 55km (34miles) from the city and services international and domestic flights
Airport Transfers
- Hire cars, taxis, rideshares and a shuttle service are available from both airports
- SkyBus express services run between 4am and 1am daily from Melbourne Airport and from early morning to evening from Avalon Airport. Both SkyBus services stop at Southern Cross Station on Spencer Street in the city. Tickets can be purchased either online or at the airport.
- You will find taxi ranks and rideshare pick-up areas at the front of each terminal – simply follow the signage. The journey to the city from Melbourne Airport takes around 30 minutes, or 50 minutes from Avalon Airport.
Getting Around Melbourne
The University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus is only a short walk or tram ride from Melbourne’s city centre.
Melbourne offers free tram rides within the city centre. To use public transport outside of the free tram zone, you need to purchase a myki card. You can purchase a myki card from retail outlets displaying the myki sign, visitor centres and at train stations.
Visa Information
Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you will need a visa to enter Australia. All other passport holders must apply for a visa before leaving home.
Tourist and Visitor Visas are available from Australian embassies, high commissions, consulates and online.
